To accurately and efficiently search the University of Toronto catalogue, please follow these next steps:
1) Begin at the Library homepage, http://www.library.utoronto.ca/
2) Click on the red tab that says 'catalogue'
3) Click on the blue link that says 'advanced search'
4) Enter the relevant keywords and change the drop-down menu to the relevant information. (E.g. if you were to type 'Othello' into the first search bar, you would change the drop-down menu to 'title'). You can also use the drop-down menus in the advanced search to refine your search by format, language, and library location.
5) Type additional keywords into the subsequent search bars in order to make your search more specific.
Use Boolean operators 'AND' 'OR' and 'NOT' when searching in order to streamline your search. For example, if you wanted critical information about the theme of jealousy in Othello, you would type 'Othello AND jealousy' into the advanced search so that the catalogue knows to search for articles that discuss both Othello and jealousy in the same work, instead of returning some articles about Othello and some articles about jealousy.
The 'OR' operator is best used when trying to broaden a search. If you want to find information about cats, but simply writing cats does not generate enough results, type 'cats OR felines' so that the catalogue searches for articles written about either cats or felines in your search.
Use the 'NOT' operator to exclude a keyword from your search. For example, if you wanted to search for information about dogs but not huskies, you would type 'dogs NOT huskies' into your search. For more information about Boolean logic, please click here.
How to search for articles using Summon
1) Begin at the library homepage, http://www.library.utoronto.ca/
2) Click on the red tab that says 'articles'
3) Click on the blue link that says 'advanced search'
4) Type in the relevant keywords and refine your search by using the drop-down menus and Boolean logic. You can further limit your article search to 'full text online' and 'scholarly journals' if you are looking for peer-reviewed articles that are available online in full (not just the abstract or summary).
Please note, when using both the catalogue and Summon, you can further refine your searches by using the facets located on the left-hand side of both screens.
